Baby Friendly Grand Central Market
The Grand Central Market in Downtown Los Angeles is the perfect place to bring a family of all ages, especially the littlest ones that need constant moving.
Short on time to roam around? Here is my guide to tasting the best of the 40 vendors available.
EggSlut – yes it’s worth the wait, but don’t waste your wait-time
The line will always be long at EggSlut, even on a Tuesday at 11 AM, so bring a friend and have one of you stand in line while the other one gets the drinks. G&B Coffee is right across the market or go for something less conventional like this Chocolate Phosphate from Wexler’s Deli. As far as your EggSluting agenda, I and everyone else will tell you to have a Fairfax, one of my Best Bites of 2015. But since you spent so much time in line, you might as well order more than you can eat, like a Gaucho sandwich made with seared wagyu tri-tip steak, or a fresh biscuit with warm maple syrup.
When in doubt, follow the crowd
There are several vendors at Grand Central Market where you can get some great Mexican-inspired cuisine, but you know you’ve got the right one when everyone in line with you is buying the meat by the pound to serve their families at home. Tacos, Tumbras a Tomas does not have a website, but with 20 years in the business, Tomas Martinez has already secured a following. Be sure to try a Carnitas Taco, the meat that started it all.
Always save room for Fromage
Normally I would encourage everyone to leave room for dessert, but not when you have a full-service cheesemonger on site like DTLA Cheese. Their grilled cheese is gourmet comfort food at it’s finest.
Eh let’s have dessert anyway
Do you want pie or doughnuts? Well, why not have both! Fat and Flour from Chef Nicole Rucker specializes in Whole Pies; Slices like Chocolate Espresso Chess Pie ($6); Handpies like Salted Caramel Apple; and more treats! You can even pre-order on Tock or the website.
On the doughnut side, visit The Donut Man who’s been crafting fresh Strawberry and Peach Doughnuts for over five decades in Glendora and now is finally making a foray into the city.
So grab your line buddy and get ready for some good eats.
