What’s in a Name: GG Kitchen
The name GG Kitchen is a combination of the names Giovanni and Giulio. Best friends for over 40 years, Giovanni founded the iconic restaurant Hostaria da Pietro in 1946 in Rome, and Giulio, a successful businessman, made the restaurant his second office. GG Kitchen was created by their respective sons, Francesco Massotti and Domenico Lomuto, in honor of the great men who came before them – who were a catalyst in their own lifelong friendship, which has brought them across the world together to share their love for great Roman food.
The Menu at GG Kitchen in Los Angeles
Like all great restaurants, the menu at GG Kitchen consists of a few things done very well: Pizza Romana, Supplì, and Dolce. Executive Chef Valerio hails from the Mamma Pizza chain in Rome and brings with him expertise for what we generally know as pinsa in the United States. It’s a dough that’s made with 80% water and is considered the healthier option when it comes to pizza. The result is a dough that is warm and fluffy on the inside but still crunches when you bite into it.
Pizza Romana
There are currently 14 different Roman-style pizzas to choose from, ranging from traditional Margherita to a Fiori and Alici made with squash blossoms and anchovies. The sauce is made fresh with crushed organic Marzano tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil, and everything is also cut to order. So when you order a spicy Diavola, the Sopressata Salami is sliced just moments before applying it to every inch of the dough.
The pizza menu is steeped in customary favorites like the Amatriciana with Guanciale Salami. Still, you’ll also find recipes unique to West Los Angeles, like the Colony crafted with mozzarella, brie, honey, walnuts, cinnamon, and extra virgin olive oil.
Despite its large appearance, each pizza is designed for one person to enjoy. Once cut, you’ll have eight slices of heaven.
Supplì
You may be wondering, what is Supplì? I can best describe it as a warm hug – if rice had arms. Technically, it’s a ball of arborio rice that is fried, but the warmth it creates after the first bite feels just like coming home to someone you love.
There are four kinds of Supplì on the menu, like Supplì Pomodoro and Basilico, made with tomato, basil, and mozzarella, and the Supplì Piccante with Italian spicy ‘nduja. The Supplì is meant to suppli-ment your meal, like an appetizer. They are 3.55 oz in size.
Dolce
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, you can choose between La Pupilla, which is a sweet pizza made with Nutella cream, shaved, coconut and strawberries, and the Angioletti, which is fried strips of pinsa served with Nutella cream and sugar. Technically, the Colony is also part of the Dolce section, but it’s a mix of sweet and savory that Angelenos tend to love.
Drinks
Quench your thirst with a bubbly bevanda, like a San Pellegrino Sparkling Water or a Limonata sparkling lemonade. There is also Coca-Cola and Diet Coke if that’s more your style.
As the restaurant evolves, the menu will too, and guests can expect the addition of Pasta and Salads made with fresh, imported Italian ingredients.
The Best Items at GG Kitchen
A Pizza is personal, so it’s often hard to recommend one over the other, but popular combinations include the spicy Diavola and the Raggio di Sole, made with ham, mozzarella, and corn. You can also customize any pizza to your liking and choose to have it pre-sliced.
I’m partial to the Crudo, which begins with a warm mozzarella base that is then topped with Italian burrata di bufala, arugula, sea salt, extra virgin olive oil, and freshly sliced prosciutto from Parma that’s been aged 18-months.
From the Supplì menu, the Supplì Piccante is the most popular, but they’ve also got Supplì Tartufato which is decadently filled with black Umbria truffle sauce and is still priced the same as the other Supplì.
