Santa Anita Park: Where slow Sundays meet fast horses
If you live in Southern California and are tired of the 2020s; then I recommend you go to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia -where it’s like the 1920s and things move just a little slower.
Get the Goldstar
Thanks to a Goldstar Event deal, my husband and I were able to enjoy the comforts of a fancy day at the racetrack at only half the price! The day begins with Valet parking, which enables you to skip a very long line and park right at the door to the Turf Club. The entire system runs on a last name basis as well, so you feel like you are a regular after only your first time.
There are several price points at which to enjoy an afternoon of horseracing, but now that I’m spoiled I can’t imagine doing anything other than The Turf Club at Santa Anita Park. It costs $20 to enter, but you are instantly transported to another era where jeans were only worn by farmers and fancy hats were status quo.
What to Drink
Santa Anita first opened its Art Deco doors in 1934…and it’s very possible the same bartenders might still be there. Although you better not ask for mint juleps…you will be sneered at! I guess it’s not the Kentucky Derby for all of us :). Go with a Pinot Newer (which is Pinot Noir in Santa Anita Park).
What to Eat
Lunch at the Turf Terrace faces the track, and it’s sort of like bleachers with very small tables attached, but the views can’t be beat.
Keep things simple with your dining; the “Famous” Corned Beef Sandwich will keep you satisfied.
Although a homemade Coconut Cream Pie isn’t a bad idea EVER!
What to Do
I know nothing about horse racing, but that made it that much more exciting! It took me about 3 races to figure it out, but by number 4 I had WON something!
Too bad 75 cents ain’t what it used to be.
Here’s hoping you might fare better at Santa Anita Park! Be sure to check for discounts before you go! It changes daily!
