What you need to be eating now in Culver City!

Culver City is that sweet spot neighborhood that is close to both the beach and central Los Angeles. It’s full of small-town charm while still feeling like a hotbed of creativity.

Culver City Nights

Here’s what you need to be eating right now in Culver City! Some brand new and some just worth a revisit!

Fifty One Chinese Kitchen

Recently reopened on the corner of Washington Blvd in the heart of downtown Culver City, this family-owned restaurant specializes in a range of different varieties of Southern Chinese cuisines beginning with the Guangdong Province. The name Fifty One comes from the zip code of the Executive Chef’s hometown.

What you’ll be eating

Lighter versions of your favorites, like Pineapple Curry Fried Rice with shrimp, scallops and oyster mushrooms ($12); Spicy String Beans ($12); and Hong Shao E-Fu Noodles available as is or with Lobster or Uni and Masago add ons ($10+).
The restaurant is open for lunch, dinner, and Dim Sum, and with a grand reopening that included a full band, I expect only the best from Fifty One Kitchen.

Roberta’s

Just down the street on Washington Blvd at the Platform complex in Culver City is where you’ll find Brooklyn favorite, Roberta’s.

What you’ll be Eating

Co-owners Brandon Hoy and Chef Carlo Mirarchi have brought along menu staples like The Famous Original ($18) and The Bee Sting made with chili oil, honey, and basil ($19). While still making room for some strictly California-inspired dishes as well.

Lighten things up with a Little Gem Lettuce with kefir dressing, pecorino, red flame grapes, red onion, and mint ($15). Or order something off the grill like a Roasted Porchetta with escarole and fennel pollen ($24).

The restaurant is open from 11 AM-10 PM and offers takeout and delivery but no reservations. Luckily there’s also a full bar with snarky sips like The Guy in the Kimono made with Aquavit and Carrot Juice ($13).

Destroyer

While you might not be able to afford a $600+ meal at Vespertine, you can take a journey through the mind of Chef Jordan Kahn for a much smaller price point at Destroyer.

What you’ll be eating

The day-only restaurant on Hayden Avenue in Culver City specializes in bowls of biodynamic vegetables, rice porridges, and boiling down eating to its most basic elements. It’s gotten so popular that they now even offer nationwide shipping for items like Icelandic Seeded Rye Bread Loaf and Housemade Syrups.
The food feels like something best enjoyed while gazing down into a Fjord, and hours later don’t be surprised to find yourself wandering the streets of Culver City contemplating the meaning of your own existence.
