What is a Pickleback?
Today I learned a fun word that’s very familiar on the cocktail scene: Picklebacking!! So what is a pickleback? It’s a dilly of a drink!
A pickleback means drinking a slug of whiskey followed by a chaser of pickle juice. It was invented in 2006. Allegedly the best way to experience this is to drink the harshest whiskey you can stand! The pickle brine acts as a natural reset for your taste-buds and creates flavor sensation you couldn’t get from just Whiskey alone.
Where can I find the best in Los Angeles?
Casey’s Irish Pub (DTLA)
The best place is Casey’s Irish Pub in Downtown LA, where they say if you don’t know what a pickleback is…you haven’t lived!!!!!!!!!! Plus you can get them on happy hour for only $5.
Plan Check Kitchen & Bar (Various)
Ask for a Whickle Back (not on the menu). It’s Jameson Black paired with kombu infused pickle brine! While you’re there be sure to sample one of their awesome burgers.
Bigfoot West (Culver City)
Bigfoot West is a lodge-style bar that makes its own brine. The menu features a Dickel 8yr Whiskey and Pickleback combo. They run an EVERY DAY happy hour from 5 to 9 p.m.
This bar has a sister property on the eastside of Los Angeles as well in Los Feliz called Bigfoot Lodge. Chances are you can piggyback on the pickleback order here as well.
